As part of their mission to influence solutions for the sector’s future, SEC launched its first programme of research projects back in October 2020.

They promised to utilise the research projects to help tackle three challenging topics impacting the housing sector, and Baily Garner were keen to play a part. Partners Andrew Little and Rob Ireland joined the research groups to input their invaluable knowledge.

In support of his commitment to improving quality in the construction industry, Andrew joined the Maintaining Building Safety workgroup which considered questions like “How do we be more demanding?” and “How do we legislatively enforce quality through our appointment of reputable organisations?”

Rob became a member of the BIM (Building Information Modelling) for Asset Management group and discussed “How can we break away from ‘the norm’ and utilise technology and the ‘new normal’ to drive efficiency through technology and remote management of maintenance?.”  This followed the publication of his article on BIM and existing buildings in the RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) Built Environment Journal.

Sharing the outcomes

Just over a year later, we can now share the final papers from the culmination of hours of collaboration from the workgroups, which included Andrew, Rob, and stakeholders from across the sector.

In response to the questions around building safety – and importantly how to procure building safety solutions – SEC has published ‘Procuring for Building Safety’ guidance.

And the final paper – ‘Unlocking BIM – an insight into asset management’ – from the first research group has also been released.
