It’s day two of National Apprenticeship Week 2022! Today Frankie Scrivener shares his views of apprenticeships.

Tell us what you’re studying and how far you are into your apprenticeship?

BSc Hons Quantity Surveying Degree Apprenticeship. I am currently one and half years into my apprenticeship and have been doing quantity surveying for two and a half years in total.

Why did you choose Baily Garner and the construction industry?

I completed work experience for Baily Garner back in 2019 and found it an incredibly welcoming and friendly environment to work in.

I had worked on site before as a labourer and really enjoyed the buzz around the construction industry. It was recommended to me to try working as a quantity surveyor by my friend who worked for Baily Garner. As soon as I started, I thoroughly enjoyed the work that I was doing and was keen to continue.

What’s been the most challenging part so far?

The most challenging part for me is the mix between university study and work, however I believe with good organisation and time management this can easily be controlled. The staff at Baily Garner have always offered support to me with my university work making that challenge easier to overcome.

And what’s been the best part?

The best part of this apprenticeship has been the people I’ve met along the way. From clients to contractors and of course the people here at Baily Garner, there has never been a dull moment and all parties have kept me on my toes. I have also enjoyed the variation of work – no two days are the same and there are always new challenges and skills to be learned.

You seem to be involved with lots of things happening across the business (like the charity quiz night!). Did you find it easy to fit in and get your voice heard?

I found it incredibly easy to fit in and get my voice heard! Like I mentioned before, the welcoming nature of the practice allowed me to feel confident enough to voice my ideas and feel as if they would be taken seriously. I have been thrilled to be involved in events such as the charity quiz night which raised a great sum of money for an excellent cause.

The people who work at Baily Garner are friendly and very easy to talk to, and this definitely made it easier for me to fit in despite the challenges of remote working.
