According to 'Rethinking Construction': "the health and safety of construction is the second worst of any industry". The report set sustainable targets for reportable accident reduction in the industry at 20% per year. Some leading clients and construction companies have recently achieved reductions in reportable accidents of 50-60% in two years or less, with consequent substantial reductions in project costs. Overall the number of fatal injuries to workers has fallen from 105 in 2000/01 to 71 in 2002/03. This is the second lowest figure recorded and demonstrates that, despite the hazardous nature of much construction work, it is possible to manage the risks and to reduce the number of fatal injuries to construction workers. Nevertheless, every fatality is one too many, most are preventable and each is a tragedy for those affected.
